What is creative writing?

The thing that’s so wonderful about creative writing is you can use it in many different types of careers across all different industries. Working at an ad agency requires creative writing. So does writing for television, working for a newspaper, and working as a food critic. 

Almost every career involves some kind of writing, even if it’s only meeting minutes, lab reports, or grant applications. And having the ability to shape a narrative effectively in any kind of writing is both a powerful and, many would argue, an essential skill. So that’s something to consider when deciding whether or not to take creative writing courses.

Careers in creative writing

Here are a few of the more traditional paths one might pursue after taking a creative writing course: 

Novelist: There are a lot of stereotypes of novelists out there, but not every novelist is a Hemingway or a Plath. Many people write novels in addition to other work that they do, and novelists have many different ways of channeling the creative process to make it work best for them. 

Journalist: Journalists typically write for newspapers, magazines, and online media. They may be investigative reporters, foreign correspondents, or advice columnists. 

Creative Writing Teacher: Many people in creative writing teach it at elementary, secondary, or college/graduate levels. Often people who teach creative writing are simultaneously working on their own passion projects, be it novels, comics, plays, or screenplays.
